Prayer of Humble Access Senior Deacon Benner
Father, we enter the quiet stillness of the garden of decision tonight, where Jesus agonized the long night before Love’s greatest day. We each have a cross to bear, Lord, so encourage us in this hour of power to change the channel of our will from mine to Thine. We know our only true happiness lies in bringing self-will to its knees in the spirit of the Man from Galilee. Hear us now as we pray as our Lord taught us to pray…Our Father,

Prayer of Confession (Unison) Senior Deacon Benner
Most merciful God, I confess that I have sinned against you
In thought, word and deed,
By what I have done, and by what I have left undone.
I have not loved you with my whole heart;
I have not loved my neighbor as myself.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
Have mercy on me and forgive me,
That I may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
To the glory of your name. AMEN
Promise of Absolution Pastor Don
Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN

THE SERVICE OF TENEBRAE WITH HOLY COMMUNION
The Vigil of Maundy Thursday
MAUNDY IS THE ENGLISH FORM OF THE LATIN WORD FOR “COMMANDMENT”. JESUS’S NEW COMMANDMENT “TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER EVEN AS I HAVE LOVED YOU” IS THE FOCUS OF MAUNDY THURSDAY. IT WAS ALSO ON THURSDAY OF HOLY WEEK THAT JESUS DEMONSTRATED HIS SERVANTHOOD LOVE BY WASHING HIS DISCIPLES’ FEET. IT WAS ON THIS DAY THIS JESUS INSTITUTED THE LORD’S SUPPER.
*TENEBRAE IS THE LATIN WORD FOR “SHADOWS”. IT WAS BEGUN IN THE 4TH CENTURY AND INCLUDES SCRIPTURE LESSONS AND THE GRADUAL EXTINGUISHING OF LIGHTS TO SYMBOLIZE THE DESERTION OF JESUS BY HIS DISCIPLES, THE APPROACH OF THE DARKNESS OF THE WORLD’S SIN, AND THE SUFFERING OF OUR LORD. THIS SERVICE CONCLUDES WITH A MOMENT OF TOTAL DARKNESS AND SILENCE TO SYMBOLIZE THE THREE DAYS OUR LORD WAS IN THE TOMB. AFTER THE BRIEF PERIOD OF DARKNESS, AND SINGING OF “WERE YOU THERE”, THE CENTRAL CANDLE WILL BE RE-LIT, SYMBOLIZING THE COMING OF EASTER SOON TO DAWN.
Please observe a time of silence at the close of service; lights will be turned up following the singing of “Were You There”.
